Creating a PSD

PSD's come in very hand whenever you need a picture with a clear background. If you are trying to cut out a picture/object, this tutorial will be great for you. Here's how to cut out an object and create a PSD out of it, Dominic style.

First, we are going to select the picture we want to use.. and my choice is shown below (it is a very simple picture, with a white background, which makes it very easy to cut out):

(click for full picture)

Next, go to your layers palette and select the layer for the image. Right click, and select "Layer from Background". This will make the image "erasable".. something necessary to cut out the image without duplicating the layer.

After you make the layer from background, select the Magic Wand Tool by pressing "W" on your keyboard. This tool allows for a one-step process of cutting out the white space in the picture (CAUTION: the wand tool might not only select the white background, but also some of the white from the picture you are trying to cut out. If that happens, you will have to erase some parts manually by using the "eraser" tool).

Once you have selected the wand tool, click on the white background of the image and press "delete". Your image should now look something like this:

(click for full preview)

You will now have to get rid of the white under his arms and around his shoes. To do so, select the "Polygon Lasso" tool on your tool palette and zoom in to the places where the white remains.

^^the picture above is what you should be seeing when you delete the whitespace under his right arm. Use the same method for the white around his shoes and under his left arm. Doing so will get you the perfect cut, manually speaking. Once you have done that, your picture should look like the one below!

Now to save the PSD, click "File >> Save As", name the PSD, and save it under the format of "Photoshop (*.PSD;*.PDD)

YOU HAVE MADE YOUR VERY OWN PSD! CONGRATULATIONS!
